Chalke Talk 6: Dealing with the difficult bits of the Bible

Many Christians, Steve argues, are in the habit of picking and choosing which bits of the Bible to believe. If a part of it is uncomfortable, we tend to gloss over it.

But instead, we should grapple with the whole of Scripture, asking deep and honest questions about how we understand it.  If the claim that ‘God is love’ holds any water then why does the Bible contain so much material that, on the face of it, depicts him as fierce, wrathful, violent, vengeful and murderous?  And, what about the fact that a straightforward reading of parts of the New Testament has been used for the promotion of slavery, the repression of women, the persecution of people of other faiths and even the rejection of those from other parts of the church?

How do we grapple with Scripture to make sense of it and apply its timeless wisdom to our lives?
