Chalke Talk 16: The Bible cannot have the final word on morality

The Church has a responsibility to engage with and tackle the moral and spiritual issues of contemporary society. However, we can only do this when we tap into the timeless wisdom of scripture – and that requires understanding that the Bible does not have the final word on every moral issue.

In the latest instalment of ‘Chalke Talk’, Steve argues that we need to understand how progressive revelation works throughout the Bible and beyond.  Taking the issue of slavery – something that every Christian today rightly sees as abhorrent – Steve shows how the practice was endorsed in the Old Testament.  However, by the time of the New Testament, slavery was still permissible but certain requirements on the treatments of slaves were insisted on by Paul.  Centuries later, it was Christians – who understood the underlying messages of justice and liberation contained in Scripture – that successfully campaigned for abolition of the practice.
